A Few Great Zombie Movies You Must See
While they may walk slowly, and are in fact dead, zombies have have certainly come alive in films and television. Their popularity started to grow in the late sixties and early seventies, thanks mainly to the pioneering efforts of directors like the legendary George Romero. Zombie movies are now perhaps the most watched of all horror-survivalist stories and these are some of the titles that led the way.
Perhaps the ultimate of all films about zombies has to belong the aforementioned George Romero. While his first zombie film, Night of the Living Dead in 1968, was the start of his historical run as king of the Zombies, it was the sequel, Dawn of the Dead, that might just be the ultimate film of this genre.
Released in the late seventies, this king of zombie movies had a cast that was made up of relative unknowns but that did not stop them from shining. The story revolves around four characters, who when the dead start taking over, take refuge inside a big American shopping mall.
For those of you who have played video games like Dead Rising and its sequel, you will immediately see where the inspiration for that game came. It is a horror masterpiece, and continues to inspire many artists to this day. Romero has since made four more “Dead” movies, the last, Survival of the Dead, was released in 2009.
Romero of course is not the only director to make “Living Dead” films, and in the eighties Dan O’Bannon’s The Return of the Living Dead introduced faster zombies that wanted to eat brains. It was also more of a comedy than Romero’s films, and while its sequel, not directed by O’Bannon, was not as good, the first one remains a classic.
He may be most famous for Lord of the Rings, but director Peter Jackson also began his career with one of the all time classic zombie movies, the incredibly gory yet comedic, Braindead, also known as Dead Alive. For film buffs and fans of the walking dead genre, this is a great movie to have in your collection.
One of the interesting novelties about this film, was when it was released on video, it was released with barf bags, in case the goriness made your stomach turn, and it still considered to be the bloodiest movie of all time, that is to say it used 300 liters of fake blood, more film blood than any other movie ever.
But for the perfect blend of comedy and zombies, look no further than Shaun of the Dead. The most modern of all the movies mentioned here, it is the best of the latest zombie movies, not only because it pays homage to Romero, but also because it is genuinely one of the funniest British movies ever made. Directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the team from the TV show, Spaced, it is a modern classic.
One thing you can be sure of is that Hollywood is far from finished with this theme. And as long as audiences, eat up these brain-eating living dead characters, zombie movies will continue to be part of our cinematic diet.
